The key to your happiness and well-being is a healthy mind and a healthy body. Yoga can help you find or restore the balance that leads to better health.
There are very real physical health benefits associated with yoga practice, such as stress relief, muscle strengthening, improved stamina and vitality.
Those who practice yoga experience improved memory and concentration, stronger motivation and willpower, creative insight and inner peace. Yoga is an ancient and enlightened way to develop the health and harmony of body, mind and soul.
To help you get the most out of your yoga practice, you may want to consider some of the many yoga accessories
These are some of the items basic to your comfort, safety and good form.
- Clothing should be comfortable and breathable to allow freedom of movement. Many prefer form-fitting attire as loose clothing can sometimes prevent you from assuming some yoga postures. If you are taking a class, form-fitting clothing allows your instructor to more easily check your alignment and allows you to check your form in the studio mirrors.
- Footwear is preferred by some, although yoga is usually practiced barefoot, some people wear cotton socks or soft yoga shoes. It is often for sanitary reasons if you take classes at a public recreation centre or a private studio.
- Yoga mats are a standard yoga accessory, especially in a class. They offer some padding so you are not lying or sitting directly on a hard floor and they offer traction, so you won't slip and injure yourself. They provide a barrier between your body and the floor. Bringing a 100% cotton towel is advisable so that you can rest your face and head on a surface you can easily keep clean. You're also going to need that towel, when you work up a sweat during your yoga practice.
- Yoga mat bags are optional but extremely practical. These are usually made of a mesh or other breathable material to prevent bad-smelling bacteria from forming if your mat is a little sweaty when you put it away. Look for one that has space for other items such as a change of clothes, your keys, and wallet.
- Yoga DVDs. If you'd rather learn and practice yoga at your home, there are many instructional and inspiring DVDs, often from top teachers.
- Yoga Props such as blocks, balls, belts and bands can help you with your form, especially if you are a beginner.
- A Water bottle is essential. Water is necessary to help you flush out the toxins and replenish any lost fluids as you perspire during your yoga practice.
As a yoga beginner, you may decide to buy just the standard items. As you advance, you will very likely decide to purchase mores yoga accessories to help you develop and grow in your practice.
